The Big Advantage To Having a Prominent Birthmark

When my daughter was born, (she is the second in birth order), I was suddenly overwhelmed with concerns over her being kidnapped at some point in her life. It’s something every Mom worries about at least once during her motherhood journey. But you might be wondering why I didn’t worry about that with my son?
When my son was born, it was an emergency cesarean. They showed him to me quickly before they whisked him away to work on him. I stole a quick glance of his face. What I saw first was the big brown thumbprint looking mark on his forehead. I wondered what I had done to my baby?! It was six hours later that I finally got to see him again and discovered it was a birthmark.

Feelings about the birthmark-

The birthmark brought a barrage of feelings. One of which, strangely was that of relief in my sleepless, new mother crazy state. I was consoled that the birthmark meant someone would never kidnap him because he was too identifiable. There’s no way you can hide his birthmark. It’s front and center on his forehead. Then my daughter was born, and I was just a little bit concerned (read- secretly consumed for a short time) with worry that my daughter could someday be kidnapped.
Birthmarks can range anywhere from cute little stork bites to large port wine marks that cover most of the face or torso.  Most birthmarks are harmless. Click To Tweet A couple of birthmarks can be an indicator of an illness, so they should always be checked out by a professional.
I have birthmarks that match on either leg. They are exactly the same. Except on one leg, the color of my skin is lighter and on the other, it is darker than normal. I’ve hypothesized that at one point before I was born, the skin on my legs in that spot must have been stuck together. One leg must have stolen the pigment from the other.
The most common issue with birthmarks is that of having a poor self-image. Some can be removed. In my son’s case, we could have it removed but we have left that up to him, and at the moment, he has no issues with it. You can read here how my son's birthmark has been compared to Harry Potter's scar and what a great experience that has been. Click To Tweet Try and find something like Harry Potter to compare it to. It makes it much more fun!
