Dear Insurance Company~ A Letter From A Special Needs Family

I know we are not your ideal of a customer. You would rather not have us enrolled on your rolls.

Yours is a business that is for-profit. You want to make money. But despite our paying you hundreds of dollars every year, and then paying thousands of dollars out of pocket every year, our family puts you in the red every year.

I wonder sometimes, how many healthy families it takes to make up for the drain on your profit margin that our family must be.

Most families use your services occasionally with kids that have colds, break their leg, or Mom has a baby. My family has been known to use you daily. Sometimes multiple times in a day. It is an unusual year when we don’t max our annual out of pocket maximum and then you are on the hook for 100% of our medical bills for the rest of the year. Personally, I get excited when we reach that point. All those “elective” medical procedures and check ups for Mom and Dad can them happen. Back surgery anyone? Pap smear?

To all the healthy families and single young people out there who support our medical welfare by being so healthy they almost never use their insurance, thank you.

To our insurance companies- it makes a lot of sense why you like to deny covering procedures now that I come to think about it. You are a business, a profit maker and there is nothing wrong with that. (Maybe I need to invest in insurance stock to recoup some of our cost.) But as much as I fight with you over coverage, I need you. So we will continue to make this relationship work somehow.
