But. . .
A couple of years ago my husband transferred to me his military education benefits. He knew I desperately wanted to go back to school and he was never going to use them so it seemed like a win, win situation. And I’ve REALLY enjoyed the benefits.
What we didn’t know or understand, is that when he gave me the benefits he had to stay in the military for four years after doing so. We didn’t understand the full extent of this when he gifted me with the benefits. We discovered that he now has two years left before he can retire after transferring the benefits to me.
He has loved his career in the military. It has defined him and made him who he is. But after 20 years of jumping out of airplanes, things like your knees start to give out. Your tolerance for stupid stuff leaves. He finds it REALY hard after thinking that we would say goodbye to this life to readjust his thinking. To ask his body to give two more years. . .
But he loves me. He knows that my plan is to spend the next 10 years while he finishes in his civilian career in law enforcement, finishing my schooling and building my career. At that point in our marriage, it will be his turn to step back and turn his hand to something else. Something new. These next two years will be hard for him.
Because he loves a woman, his kids, and his country he might grumble a little bit but he’ll suck it up and serve us all just as he has been for the past 20 years.
