Favorite Things- Music

It’s been a while since I have done a “Favorite Things” post. And as life gets crazy, sometimes it’s helpful to remind yourself of the things you love. The things you have a connection to.

One of the things that have soothed my soul, given me life, and a way to communicate is music. Music has a power that can’t easily be translated into words. That’s why we have music, so it can speak the language of the soul that mere words can’t. And if I remember to turn it on, it can save me from completely losing it on my children.

So today for my favorite things, I’m sharing with you just some of my favorite music.

Bye, Bye Blues

Family legend has it that my Grandpa was playing his banjo one day when we were visiting and I was about 2 years old. I started singing this with him. This one has Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong. What’s not to love about this?

Somewhere Out There

Ah, Fifel. An American Tale with mice, rats and some awesome music that pulls at your heartstrings. Many were the night that I would sing this song as a child sitting at my window dreaming of the man I would someday meet. Yes, I was that child.

Fur Elise by Beethoven

The first sonata that I learned to play on the piano, and memorized. (Memorizing music is not something that comes easily for me.) Beethoven will forever be one of my favorite composers. The perfect composer for a Lyman (my maiden name) to play. Most of us that play the piano in my family believe in playing at tempo and don’t play very quietly. The 3 movements are heavenly.

To Make You Feel My Love by Garth Brooks

I found this song through the movie Hope Floats. Sandra Bullock plays a woman that has just lost her father among other things. She walks into her father’s closet and can still smell him. That scene brought me back to when my Grandfather died. I walked into his closet and was overcome by the memories evoked by the scent of him I found there.

You Say by Lauren Diagle

I was introduced to Lauren Diagle’s song You Say by a blog post of someone’s that I read. It was love at first listen. A song one can identify so easily with; Christian or not. Which is what led to it’s rise on the music charts.

What are your favorite songs? What makes your heart sing, or gets it pumping? One that makes you want to dance all night?

  1. Wow; very impressive list. I am all over the map when it comes to music; it so depends on the mood. So instead of songs; I can list some favorite artist. While growing up; my mother was a huge Johnny Cash fan (I literally know the album “Bitter Tears” from beginning to end ..word for word. She passed almost 16 years ago; so when I am really in a funk and missing her …The man in black totally does it for me. I love “old” country …so you can think along the lines, of Dolly Parton, Tanya Tucker, Conway Twitty, Charley Pride. But I also love “new” country …Garth Brooks, Carrie Underwood. I adore almost all in that ’70’s era. Those one hit wonders; I am so toe tapping. Then again, I also did the groups; The Osmonds, Jackson 5, The Temptations, The Eagles (I did say ..I am all over the map) I am into music. It takes me away to places in my mind that I need to be. If even for a hot moment; I can get lost in that space. Thank God for Musicians that write the songs, Thank God for those that can carry that tune ♫♫♫♫
