My List of Favorite Books I Read in 2019

2019 is coming to a close and I read some awesome books this year that I want to share with you. So grab a cup of hot chocolate and get comfortable and browse my best reads for this year.

The Girl Who Smiled Beads by Clemantine Wamariya and Elizabeth Weil

Required reading for a college course I was taking. I was SO glad I bought this book rather than renting or checking it out from the library. I’m picky about which books I add to my home library as space gets limited, but this one belongs in your home library. True story of a girl and her sister who grew up during the Rwandan genocide after being separated from their family and eventually being sent to America as refugees. I learned SO much about Rwanda, the human spirit, and more. I highly recommend. (And Oprah does too.)

Every Man A King: A Short, Colorful History of American Populists by Chris Stirewalt

We worry that politics have reached a terrible point in our history. We wonder if there is any return for our society. I loved this book because it gave me hope. Stirewalt gives it through going through history showing us that we have been here before, and that the political scene has been worse in our history than we currently see. If you are losing hope for our country, this is a good one to restore your hope.

Roll With It by Jamie Sumner

Looking for a middle grade book for your kids that’s wholesome and fun? One that doesn’t include underpants or wimpy? (Sorry, not a fan.) This is a fabulous book that has been winning all kinds of awards.

A young girl named Ellie and her Mother, move to Oklahoma to live with her Grandparents to help out as her Grandpa isn’t doing well. Ellie loves to bake, finds friends, and wins at putt-putt golf, all while getting around in a wheelchair. It’s a fun and delightful story that makes something that kids may view as scary or unusual- like a wheelchair and makes it completely normal. I highly recommend this book and my kids do too!

The Tubman Command by Elizabeth Cobbs

A historical novel about Harriet Tubman that I thoroughly enjoyed. Have you seen the new movie Harriet and want to learn more about this fascinating woman? This is a great way to do so. Very well researched and engrossing to read.

How Are You Feeling Mama? By Shelby Spear and Lisa Leshaw

Are you looking for a book that will make you feel hope about your Motherhood? That makes you feel like you ARE doing a good job?

Lisa and Shelby share reflections from Christian and Jewish perspectives on their experiences of motherhood and relate them to the Psalms. This book gave me such joy and hope. Also a great baby shower gift.

Anne of Greene Gables by L.M. Montgomery

A classic and always a favorite. This year I’ve been able to start sharing this wonderful character with my children. Of course they would never read it themselves. It’s a book Mom likes. But when you have them stuck in the car for long drives and books on Audible to listen to, they suddenly realize that Mom knows what she is talking about in regards to go books. – Not that they would admit it. . . We just recently started the 4th book in the series- Anne of Windy Poplars, because of course my children wouldn’t let me stop with just one.

Drop a note in the comments. Let me know what you really enjoyed reading this year so I can add them to my list.

You can also follow me on Good Reads to see what I’m currently reading.
