A Giveaway and Review of the Book- Unbound

One of the best things about taking up writing again has been finding an online support system of amazing writers. I learn tricks of the trade, get support and get to help others. Bonus! Authors write books and they need people to review them and talk about them. When Jamie Sumner posted that she needed people to read her book and write reviews about it, I was virtually waving my hand, “Pick me! Pick me!” A free book that I get access to before anyone else and I get to write about it? That’s a lottery win for a Bibliophile.
I knew nothing about the book  I had just signed up to review, so I didn’t know what to expect.
What I received was a book that is precious, beautiful and soul-searching. The book is Unbound- Finding Freedom from Unrealistic Expectations of Motherhood by Jamie Sumner. On the surface, it appears to be about a woman’s struggle with infertility and how she faced that challenge and ultimately overcame it. But the book is about so much more and I have fallen in love with it. Whether you have struggled with infertility or not it is likely you will find within its pages something that will help you grow. Something you will identify with.
My favorite phrase in the book is this-

“…I sat in the silences to see what God would do with my heart.”
-Jamie Sumner

She was going through a very difficult time in her life and she was angry with God, she wasn’t sure she could trust him. So she sat in the silences to see what he would do with her heart. This is such a beautiful illustration using words for what I too have felt when life has reached out and dealt me a hand that was hard to trust in God that he would turn this trial to my benefit and that he really did have my best interests at heart.
Often I hear women complain about the women in the Scriptures getting the short end of history because it was written by men. Many of the women in the Bible don’t have names or have very short stories. One of the things I love about this book is Jamie has found one of these women for each chapter of her book, some unnamed that have struggled as she has struggled, suffered loss, hurt, experienced anger with God. Hannah, Hagar, Miriam, and Mary are just a few of the women she has brought to life by sharing her struggles with us and showing us how she (and we) are not alone in this but that these other women have gone before us and showed us the way. This brought needed perspective and made me look at the women of the Bible with new eyes and appreciation.
